Margherita Lazzati presents cacciatrice di miraggi (Hunter of Mirages), the new interactive photographic exhibition to be staged from 22 March to 9 May in Milan at the historic headquarters of the Ambrosianeum Cultural Foundation.

Milan 22 February 2012 – A new appointment with the public for photographer Margherita Lazzati following her international success with My Story with Samuel Beckett in Portobello. Margherita is back in Milan, this time with an interactive exhibition in which the public will be called upon to make its own contribution. The exhibition consists of a series of 25 shots-mirages displayed in the sixteenth-century Pellegrini Rotunda. Once a stable of the adjacent Palazzo dell’Arcivescovado in piazza del Duomo, since the post-WWI period, this has been the headquarters of the  Fondazione Culturale Ambrosianeum , a forum for meetings and exchanges and a lively presence on the Milanese cultural scene.

The exhibition is structured in two parts: the first part, the exhibition itself, is made up of the 25 photographs (divided into four sections, View, Lights in the Water, Tribute to Anish Kapoor and Self-Portrait) that Margherita Lazzati sent, as postcards, to a number of selected recipients, who were asked to comment on them; the second part is the interactive part, in which members of the public, visitors of all ages and pupils from both primary and secondary schools, are asked to participate actively, by leaving a written comment.

The mirages that Margherita Lazzati proposes are, as she herself defines them: “reflected views that recall the world of dreams and, dreamlike, disappear if they are not captured by the click of a camera … Through this project I would like to discover the emotion, imagination and thoughts of those who look at my mirages, and tocontinue to correspond with those who, visiting the exhibition, leave a thought behind them”.

”Feeling a little envious of her international success – recalls Marco Garzonio, President of the Ambrosianeum Cultural Foundation – I asked Margherita Lazzatiwhether we might entertain the idea of an exhibition of photographs at the Ambrosianeum. What I had in mind was (...) the creation of a rich and penetrating set of visual documents to complement the work of monitoring the city's sociocultural transformations, which the Foundation has been doing for the last twenty years through its survey “Rapporto”. Margherita overturned the fine and established patterns of an institution. She agreed to gather material for an exhibition to be staged at the Pellegrini Rotunda, but there was a surprise in store. The title she chose: “Cacciatrice di miraggi”. It breathed poetry into dry studies, research and documents, animating them.”

She wanted to know, without presuming to interpret or claiming to share, the feelings that these glimpses of the world evoked in the recipients of her postcards”.

Collected in a bilingual catalogue published by Galleria l’Affiche are the postcards of the photographs exhibited and the comments to date received in response to the first sending of them. When the exhibition is over, a book will be published containing a selection of the thoughts left by visitors. The catalogue will also be on sale in the Feltrinelli bookshops in Milan.
 
The authors of the responses to the first round of e-mailed postcards include: Claudio Abbado, Simonetta Agnello Hornby, Giovanni Barbareschi, Davide Benati, Simone Baudo, Bros, Giobbe Covatta, Maddalena Crippa, Anna Ferrante, Marco Garzonio, Ennio Morricone, Lea Pericoli, Umberto Veronesi, and Giovanna Zucconi.
 
The exhibition is sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Culture, by the City of Milan (Department for Culture) and by the Catholic University of Milan (Department of Psychology). The staging of the exhibition is sponsored by Credito Artigiano and the inauguration by the Marche-based wine company Lacanosa.
